Tingsted, Maribo, Denmark - family of Hans Pedersen Kylling

Searching through Tingsted churchbooks and census records today. Dec 16, 1803 is my best choice for a marriage date of my 5th great-grandparents Hans Pedersen (Kylling) and Birthe Olesdatter, who were married in Systofte, Maribo, Denmark.

Today I am looking for other records.

Hans Pedersen Kylling was 67 years old in the 1840 census. His wife was a widow (Enke) in 1845. Searching the churchbook for 1824-1841, I found his death January 11, 1841 at the age of 68.

Checking for his wife Birthe's death 1858-1891 Tingsted, no luck

found him
- baps of children, especially Niels Hansen & Peder Hansen who appear in the census records but not on familysearch.org (only found  *Else, Kirsten & Ane Magreth)

175th Birthday of William MERCER

William MERCER, son of George MERCER and his wife Jane of Port-de-Grave, Newfoundland, we believe to have been born October 10th, 1836. He was baptized some time in 1837 by Thomas Anguin, minister.

William and Hannah Rose Mercer, All Saint's Cemetery #2 Foxtrap
"In loving memory of William beloved husband of Hannah Mercer  Died March 3, 1903 at age 65 yrs."

William MERCER Sr. died an unfortunate death, as reported in the newspaper:

“The Evening Telegram”
St. John’s, Newfoundland Friday, March 6, 1903 page 3
NOTES FROM KELLIGREWS
There passed away at Kelligrews on Tuesday night a well-known and respected resident in the person of Mr. William Mercer. The deceased had been ill for a period of two weeks, the latter part of which time he suffered indescribable misery. The accident which led to his death was met with under very sad and peculiar circumstances. He left his home on Wednesday morning, the 18th ultimo, and drove to town accompanied by is daughter, Mrs. Lambswood, and after doing certain business there, he left to return home alone, and his daughter, acting under his advice took the
Evening Train
as it was too frosty to go over the road. He arrived at Octagon Lake at 6:30 p.m., and expecting to have a smart drive across the lake, he sat down upon a barrel which formed part of his load and urged is horse to a trot, but the animal in some unaccountable way ran upon a bank of snow which was piled up in forming the race course. One of his runners cut through the crust, and is slide being loaded high, instantly capsized throwing him backwards on the ice. Seeing the horse had fallen also he immediately attempted to rise, but strange to say, found himself utterly unable to move, his limbs being
Entirely Paralyzed.
Finding every effort to free himself from the death grip in vain, and feeling he must soon freeze to death, he called to the inmates of the Octagon in the hope that someone may hear and come to his assistance. Finally, after two long dreadful hours of agony, his cries were heard by some ladies who were on a visit to the Octagon, and were returning home. They found him chilled and exhausted, and his left hand, which was exposed, being dreadfully frostbitten. They managed, after some time, to convey him to Mr. Drukens’ house, where they did all they could to comfort him, until he was taken home, where he was since attended by Dr. Chisolm.
But in Spite of All Care,
skill and attendance, that unrelenting agel of death hovered by his bedside. The voice of God had called him, and his poor, suffering body was relieved at 11:45 on Tuesday night, when his spirit passed to the great beyond. He was aged 67, and leaves a wife, two sons and five daughters to mourn their sad loss. But, why should we mourn for him whose gone, or shake at death’s alarms, for death’s the message sends to call him to his arms. His funeral will take place on Friday, and will be attended by the S.U.F. in procession, by whom he was loved and respected as an old and faithful member.

Mary LAMB, baptized Jul 17, 1768 at ELY, Cambridgeshire

My 5th great-grandmother Mary LAMB was christened 243 years ago.  Her parents were Henry LAMB and Mary STEVENS, who were married 23 June 1765 at Ely, Cambridge. Henry Lamb was an innkeeper.

Ely was named for the abundance of eels found in the nearby marshes. Ely was an island until the fens were drained in the 18th century.

Both Mary's baptism and her parents marriage were performed at Trinity, which must refer to the Ely Cathedral, the principal church of Ely. Its full name is the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. interior images

Henry and Mary Lamb had an earlier child also named Mary, baptized January 15, 1766 and buried days later on January 19, 1766. I have not yet found any other children baptized by this couple.

Mary LAMB married William SHELVERTON October 18, 1787 in Burwell, Cambridgeshire. He had many occupations. The couple had at least 11 children:
William (bap 1789, died in infancy)
Mary (bap 1790) married John Harlock
William (1793-1846, emigrated to Melbourne, Australia) married Mary Casburn
Ann (1795, died as a child)
Elizabeth (bap 1797, died in infancy)
Samuel (bap 1797, died 1848 Hertfordshire) married Mary Williamson
George (1799-1883 Hpbart) married Ann Poole
Henry (1802-1868) married Sarah BUNTING (my ancestors)
Ann 1804-1850, married Henry Charles Frost
Lamb 1805-1884 in Suffolk
Sarah 1808, died in infancy

William SHELVERTON died in 1831 in Burwell, Cambridgeshire. Mary LAMB SHELVERTON lived until January 1850. She died with her youngest daughter Ann Shelverton Frost at her side at Lower Grosvenor Place, London. She left her wordly goods to her daughter Ann and her granddaughter Mary Ann Lamb Frost,  who later married Henry Tregonwell Fricker.

285th anniversary of the baptism of Elizabeth MARCHANT

Elizabeth was my 6th great-grandmother. Her parents were Richard MARCHANT and Mary EVETT.
She was the eldest of six children. Only one sibling survived to adulthood, her brother Jabez who was six years younger. Elizabeth was baptized 26 June 1726 in Bath, Somerset, England.

Elizabeth MARCHANT married Vickris DICKINSON 15 May 1746 in Comberwell, Wiltshire.  This seems to refer to modern day Cumberwell, near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. This was Vickris' second marriage; his first wife Martha Reeve left him a widow with an infant son, Caleb Dickinson (1740-1820).

Their first child, Richard was born in 1747, but died as an infant and was buried May 8, 1747. Elizabeth's mother, Mary Marchant (nee EVETT) died less than two years later. The couple's second child and our ancestor Mary Dickinson was born in 1748 and lived until 1799. Mary married Henry CRESWICKE of Hanham Court, near Bristol. Other children are Elizabeth and Richard (both died in infancy), Francis (died at the age of twelve) and Charles, who married Catherine Allingham.

Elizabeth was buried January 21, 1790 in Bristol.

Happy 291st anniversary, William SHELVERTON & Martha MANNING

My 7th great-grandparents were married on June 25, 1720 in Snailwell, Cambridgeshire, England. Snailwell is near Freckenham.
(The original record lists the groom as William SILVERTON).

Keith Paterson  has posted this photo of St. Peter's in Snailwell. This may have been the church where they were married.

We are not sure where exactly William and Martha were born and baptized, nor do we yet know their parents.

The couple lived at Timworth, Suffolk, near Bury St. Edmunds.
They had at least nine children:
Martha 1721
Hannah 1722 - died 1782 Freckenham, Suffolk.
Elizabeth 1724
Mary 1727
Anne 1729
*William 1731, married Ann BELL, died 17 Oct 1796 Burwell.
Susanna 1733, married Charles Mortlock, died 1821 Freckenham
Samuel 1735
Thomas 1736 baptized May, buried November

William Shelverton was buried 17 Nov 1757 in Freckenham, Suffolk. His wife Martha Shelverton was buried many years later - 20 Aug 1783 in Freckenham.

There is a SHELVERTON one-name project at GOONs. Contact Sandra Adams

This is our "brick wall couple". Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Yesterday was the anniversary of the baptism of Simon DICKINSON

Simon DICKINSON was baptized June 24, 1541 in Bradley, Staffordshire, England. He was my 10th great-grandfather. I have added him to our tree at ancestry.

Simon's parents were Richard DICKINSON (b.1521) and Elizabeth BAGNALL. Richard was a Magistrate who lived at Bradley Hall, in Staffordshire.  The couple were married about 1540. Simon was named for his maternal grandfather, Simon BAGNALL

There is some contention about Simon's parents. Some believe them to be James DICKINSON and Elizabeth HASLELOCK.

Here is a fine line drawing and description of Bradley Hall.

Previously I had thought Bradley Hall to be in Bradley, Staffordshire. It seems that it was actually in Kingswinford. There is a local connection to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Simon Dickinson married Katherine SUTTON on February 21, 1541 in Bradley Hall, Staffordshire. They had at least four children: Edward, Dudley, Eleanor & William.

Simon died in 1613 in Bradley Hall, Staffordshire.

Rubbing shoulders with Danish Royalty...

On my mother's side:

Rev. David Lindsay, my 11th great-grandfather, sailed to Norway with James VI of Scotland to fetch Anne of Denmark, daughter of Frederick II of Denmark & Sophie of Mecklenburg-Gustrow. He married them in Old Bishop's Palace in Oslo in Nov 1589. Anne was previously married by proxy to James VI, in August of that year at Kronborg Castle, known as the setting of Hamlet. Anne had tried to sail to Scotland, but was forced back to the shores of Norway, where she travelled overland to Oslo.

In 1589, the king of united Denmark-Norway was Christian IV, who reigned from 1588-1648. Christian IV succeeded his father at the age of 11, and was the longest reigning monarch of Denmark.

On my father's side,

Jacob Bording, my 13th great-grandfather, was the personal physician of Denmark and Norway's King Christian III. Jacob's daughter Johanna Bording married Lucas Bacmeister, my12th great-grandfather, who had tutored Johann & Magnus, the younger sons of Christian III in 1553 - 1556.

I am sure there are more.

FHL film 2376464 - from the State Archive of the Transcarpathian Region in Uzhorod (now Ukraine)

Trying to figure out if these records will contain anything about Iza, which is certainly in the region. Of course I do not (yet!) read Cyrillic or speak Russian so simply finding out what is there  is no small task indeed.

from the Family Search catalog entry: , translated using Google Translate, and rearranged so I can make better sense of the record entry.

"Greek Catholic Church records (births, marriages, deaths, extracts, miscellaneous church records and correspondance) for multiple locations of Mukacheve Eparchy in Ungvár, Ung, Hungary and Ung district; later Užhorod, Podkarpatská Rus, Czechoslovakia; now Uzhorod, Zakarpattia, Ukraine
and Munkács, Bereg, Hungary; later Mukačevo, Podkarpatská Rus, Czechoslovakia; now Mukacheve, Zakarpattia, Ukraine. Text in Russian and Ukrainian."

I am assuming that there are several Items included on each film?
I do not have any idea what the notation "F. 151, Fr. 2, d. 134" on 2376464 might mean.
In the original Cyrillic it appears as "Ф. 151, о. 2, д. 134"
Could this refer to frame numbers on the microfilm? Districts or villages within the region? (wishful thinking on my part). There seems to be some level of duplication.
I am hoping there are actual names involved and not simply a summary of the numbers of baptisms / marriages performed. The word 'bulletin' (Ведомости) throws me for a loop.

Some Immigrants from IZA arriving at Ellis Island 1905-1924

.
At the OGS conference in Hamilton this past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend several of Lisa Alzo's sessions. I am listening as I type to her webinar on researching immigrant ancestors. I am now a huge fan, and have several of her books including Baba's Kitchen and Three Slovak Women.

At her suggestion, I am attempting to find a researcher who will be able to help me determine which records (if any) exist for our ancestral village of Iza. I have not had any luck finding anyone able to do so.

For the time being, I am going to start transcribing records for any and all immigrants from Iza. I would be very happy to hear from anyone interesting in researching Iza or other villages near to Khust.

BOJTHE, Alexander (age 22) arrived Sep 7 1923 on the 'Aquitania' sailing from Cherbourg, France
- student, Hungarian language, Czechoslovak nationality, Slovak ethnicity
- next of kin Father Jan BOJTHE of Iza z Nitra Czechoslovakia
- final destination Philadelphia, PA

DAUBNER, Emma (age 33) arrived Aug 26 1921 on the 'Rotterdam' sailing from Rotterdam, Holland
with DAUBNER, Marie (age 2)
- ChechoSlavakia nationality, Russian ethnicity
- husband Mr. P.. Daubner Box 1, St. Clair, PA
- born Lipkapdyana, ChechoSlovakia, can read German
- last permanent residence Iza

The Carpatho-Rusyn Village of IZA

.
One frustrating brick wall in our research continues to be the difficulty in locating records for our ancestral village of Iza. I would welcome any contact from others interested in this village or region. If I have made any errors, any corrections would be appreciated. As always, this is a work in progress. We would be interested in collaborating.

Anna Voitenko has taken some striking photographs of Iza.

Vasil SABO (also known as Bill) and his wife Maria SABO came to Ontario from Iza in 1930.
They were born in Iza in the 1890s. They married around 1919 in Iza, and had three children there. In Canada, they had an additional six children.

Other surnames include:
VUCHKAN / VUCKAN,
SABOV / SABOE,
 MIKLUS / MYKLUSCH / McLUSH

For a long time, Iza was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Vasil and Maria Sabo could claim to be born in Hungary.

Iza in the Maramaros district in 1912

A closer look: Iza is 3 miles north of Huszt (Hungarian) / Khust (Ukrainian)

By the time Vasil Sabo migrated to the United States to work in the early 1920s, Iza was considered part of the Sub-Carpathian Rus region of Czechoslovakia.

Iza is now part of the Zakarpattia oblast in the Ukraine. It is located roughly in the bottom middle of the oblast, which is the red section below.

There is a geocache in the nearby city of Khust: UKRDOUG Castle Tours - Khust Fortress. The Khust Fortress was build in the 11th Century by the Hungarian King Ladislaus I. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by Mongolian warriors led by a son of Genghis Khan in 1243.

Happy Birthday to Anna Marie POULSEN of Ålborg, Denmark

.
Anna Marie POULSEN was my father's paternal grandmother. Her parents were Christian Peter POULSEN and Mathilde Marie LORENTZDATTER.

My grandfather, Poul Robert Werner POULSEN (1908-1979) was not raised by his mother. He was fostered by the BACH family of Nørresundby.

Anna Marie POULSEN had three children. Her first child, Poula Jorga Mathilde was born in 1906 and died that same year. My grandfather was the second child. Her third child, Carl Ewald, was born in 1910. We have been unable to discover any more about him.

Perhaps the greatest mystery for us is the father of Poul R.W. Poulsen. He met him only once, and considered the Bach family to be his true family. He did not tell his sons the name of his father before his death in 1979.

I do not know when Anna Marie died, or if she ever married. She did return home from the city of Aalborg to tend to her ailing parents.
.

Happy 212th Anniversary, Hans OLSEN & Maren JØRGENSDATTER of Eskilstrup, Maribo, Denmark

Hans OLSEN & Maren JØRGENSDATTER are my 5th Great-Grandparents. They were married May 3, 1799, in Eskilstrup.

Searching Eskilstrup baptisms, 1786 and earlier, no luck so far.

Feast Day of Saint Catherine of Siena

Our Catherines:

Catherine SNOOKE (bap 19 March 1699 Portsmouth), married 7 Feb 1722 to John OSLAND
her parents were John & Mary Snooke -- do not know when she or her husband died (after 1728)

Catherine WILKINS married 8 Oct 1712 to Robert PEACOCK Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire
we do not know her parents, or birth/baptism date

Catherine WISHART of Pittarow, Mearns, Scotland, married Alexander BARCLAY 1449

Catherine ?, married Daniel SICORD abt. 1696
- Many records say she was Catherine WOERTMAN, daughter of  Dirck Jans Woertman and Marrietje Denyse of Brooklyn, born  2 April 1677 in Brooklyn
- unfortunately, that Catherine WOERTMAN seems to have died as a child
- Other sources say she is Catherine WATERBROOKS, possibly dau. of Dennis and Elizabeth
I have found no evidence to support either claim, nor have I seen the actual marriage record of Daniel SICORD / SECORD / SYCART

 (something to explore later)

and her daughter Catherine SICORD born Oct 1704 in New Rochelle, married Daniel GIRAUD 1724
- also on ancestry, found a death date for her: 11 May 1771 in Yorktown, NY. I don't know the original source, but a nice place to start.

Catarina GRILLO married Filippo NEGRONE of Genoa

Happy 214th Anniversary Robert BALDREY and Sarah FIELD

Robert BALDRY was baptised in Denton, Norfolk on 16 Aug 1772. His parents were Thomas BALDRY and Sarah PAIN. Robert had at least two older siblings: Sarah (who married William Pallent)  and Thomas (who married Elizabeth).

looking for her death, I found a digital image of her husbands death in Nov 1812. Some ancestry files list Dorthe's death/burial date to be the same as her husband. I have not found any evidence of her death in the Keldby records at that time

more about Henry LAMB of Ely, Cambridgeshire

Ok, so our LAMBs of Ely were associated not with the "Lamb Inn" but in fact with the Red Lion, a 17th century coaching inn in the village of Stretham, near Ely.

Cambridgeshire Chronicle, 19 March 1785, page 3.
HENRY LAMB takes this opportunity of acquainting the public, That he has lately removed from the SHIP INN in Ely, to the RED LION Inn there, and neatly fitted up the house, and laid in a quantity of right good fresh liquors of all kinds, where he hopes for a continuance of the favors of his friends, and those who chuse to honor him with their custom, may be assured of meeting with civil usage, and good accommodation and entertainment.
Littleport is six miles from Ely. This photo suggests there was some sort of murder at the Ship Inn, but I have been unable to find any details. Dutch landlords murdered by prisoners?

Henry LAMBs son-in-law William SHELVERTON, husband of Henry's daughter Mary LAMB, took over as innkeeper of the Red Lion in 1790. This was to be only for a short time - the inn and its contents were auctioned off in 1792.

For Easter - Elizabeth LAMB, chr. April 24 1696, Abdie, Fife

We have a line of LAMBs in Abdie, Fife in the 17th century.

Elizabeth Lamb was baptized on this day in 1696.
dau. of John Lamb bap 1673
son of William Lamb bap 1643
son of Robert Lamb

Elizabeth LAMB had brothers William and George.
She married Robert BEVERIDGE of Abdie on Aug 31, 1721.
They had at least 5 children:
John, David (our ancestor), William, Margaret, Richard and Janet.

Elizabeth's son David BEVERIDGE married Agnes KINGHORN in Abdie on 31 Dec 1748.

Elizabeth Margaret PETERS

.
A courageous woman, who extricated herself from an unpleasant situation and made a good life for her daughter (my husband's great-grandmother) and herself. I wish I knew more about her. At various point in her life, she went by Elizabeth, Margaret, Elizabeth Margaret, and Margaret Elizabeth.

Siblings
Emily 1849-1852
Anne 1851, married 1870 James Cheesman (hawker)
Eliza 1859, visiting married sister Emily 1881 (cloth sorter),
Emily 1861, married William Gould (costermonger) 1879,

2 Aug 1880
Elizabeth Margaret PETERS married James LOCKETT, her neighbour. The marriage was witnessed by his older sister Mary Ann Lockett. Her father William PETERS, skin dresser, died five years earlier, when Elizabeth Margaret was eleven years old. She had three older sisters. Their mother died before the end of 1880. Perhaps the mother was already ill at the time of the marriage.

Apr. 1881 Census Margaret Lockett (nee Peters) was living with her husband James LOCKETT in Tottenham. Shortly afterwards she would be pregnant with her first child.

Jan 29, 1882 Margaret has returned to her parent's address at the time of her daughter's baptism.(Not sure who was living at 3 Hearns Buildings in 1881 census?) Presumably she and her daughter Annie Eliza had little or no further contact with James Lockett after she left.

Apr 1891 - 2 Willow Grove, Bermondsey
She is calling herself Elizabeth ATKINSON, living with her husband William ATKINSON, a tanner's labourer. Annie Eliza has taken her stepfather's name. The couple have three children besides Annie Eliza - Emily (age 5), Henry (age 2) and William (age 1)
- at Emily's baptism Mar 1886, her mother is listed as Margaret

Apr 1901 - 66 Elsted Street
Annie Eliza is married and has just had twins, not yet named. Elizabeth Margaret ATKINSON's 1st grandchild, John Drake, is staying with his grandparents. Emily is 15, Henry 13, William 11. New children are Alfred (8), Albert (5), Minnie (3), and Frank (1) - same age as his nephew John Drake.

1902 William and Elizabeth Margaret PETERS youngest daughter is born, Ada Jane.

Apr 1911 - Chelmsford, Essex
Alfred, Albert, Minnie, Frank and Ada Jane are still at home (ages 18-9)
Annie Eliza DRAKE has emigrated to Ontario with her family.
Emily has married William HAYNE
Henry is now a butcher, boarding in Kent, soon to emigrate to New Zealand 1912
William? not sure where in Canada in 1911, presumably Vancouver BC (he was a greengrocer there in 1910) also a butcher by 1915

When William enlisted in 1915, his mother Margaret Elizabeth Atkinson was living in Leytonstone, Essex.
At that time, he was in Canada (Hamilton! 16 Apr. 1915)
Frank emigrated to British Columbia later on as well.

Elizabeth Margaret Atkinson died in Essex in 1948 at the age of 84. (5a 106)

Happy 190th Anniversary, Job COX and Mary DIXON, 5th great-grandparents of my children

.
Job COX and Mary DIXON were married on this day, April 21, in the year 1821 in Etchilhampton, Wiltshire, England.

Incidentally, Etchilhampton had an interesting crop circle in 2006.

I do not yet know their parents. Their are two possibilities for Mary Dixon in Brinkworth, Wiltshire.

DIXON                 Mary             16 Mar 1800  d Robert & Sarah
DIXON                 Mary             13 Apr 1800  d Abraham & Jane

There is a promising baptism for Job COX, who states on census returns he was born in Devizes
23 Dec 1798 Job Cox

Southbroom St. James, Wiltshire, England
parents William Cox & Jane
indexing project C05915-1 England - ODM film 950263

Which leads me on family search to brother Saul Cock baptized at St. James 1796, and possibly to William Cock baptized in Etchilhampton in 1900.

There is a marriage in Etchilhampton 2 Jun 1789 between William COCK and Jane JENNINGS

Walter DOLMAN, baptized 400 years ago Calne, Wiltshire, England

Walter DOLMAN was baptized April 21, 1611 in Calne, Wiltshire, as the son of William DOLMAN. His parents were likely the William DOWMAN who married Joane JEFFRY (aka Joane JEFFRIES) in Bremhill, Wiltshire 10 Feb 1605.

Walter's siblings included Anne, Margaret, Suzanne and William.

Walter married Frances SPUNLY in Calne on 26 May 1640.

Their son Walter was baptized Aug 1640 in Calne. He married Frances FOWLER 12 Oct 1663 in Calne.

Walter (senior) was buried 16 Dec 1708 in Calne.

Feast Day of Saint Agnes of Montepulciano - our AGNES ancestors

.
Agnes FINLAY died Dec 1749 Balmerino, Fife, Scotland

Agnes MITCHELL, married James LOW 4 Feb 1724 in Tannadice, Angus, Scotland

and of course my Grandmother, Agnes POULSEN of Saskatoon (nee PEDERSEN in Sorterup, Denmark)

...one of my favourite Agnes relations is not a direct ancestor
Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar and March, wife of Patrick 9th Earl of Dunbar and March, also known as Black Agnes of Dunbar
(we do have a direct connection to Black Agnes' younger sister Isabella RANDOLPH, who married Patrick Dunbar's cousin John de DUNBAR)

Elizabeth LATTEY of Compton Abbas, Dorset

Betty Lattey married William Parham 21 Dec 1785 in Compton Abbas, Dorset.

Just found this transcription which corrects the spelling of her surname - I knew her as Betty LATTY for years.
William PARHAM & Betty LATTEY [x] married 21-Dec 1785 by banns Witnesses; Bennett PARHAM; Mary HILL

http://www.opcdorset.org/Compton/ComptonAbbas/ComptonAbbasMarrs.htm

Thank you Sue Stead for providing these invaluable transcriptions of the Compton Abbas parish registers.
Also lovely photos of the parish http://www.opcdorset.org/Compton/ComptonAbbas/ComptonAbbas.htm

From the monumental inscriptions of Compton Abbas
William PARHAM died 18th June 1838 age 77
Elizabeth PARHAM died Jan 22 1839 aged 76

This suggests that Elizabeth Parham (nee Lattey) was born in

Some trees on ancestry.co.uk list Betty Lattey as the daughter born in 1763 to John Lattey. Family Search has one candidate for this person:   John Burden LATTY baptized 1740 Compton Abbas by Shaftesbury, Dorset, son of Elizabeth Latty. Unfortunately, John Burden Latty died 8 Jan 1740, 4 days after his christening.

There is a John LATTEY buried in Compton Abbas in 1782, also from the parish transcriptions.

Dinah GILBERT bap 15 Feb 1814 Sound Island, my 4th great-grandmother

Dinah GILBERT was baptised on Sound Island, Newfoundland Feb 15, 1814. Her parents were John and Mary Gilbert. We don't yet know her mother Mary's maiden name. She must have died while Dinah was a child, because her father John Gilbert remarried November 6, 1827 to Mary Ann BEAZLEY in Burin, Newfoundland.

Dinah married Henry BECK 26 September 1831, also on Sound Island. They had eight children, including Matilda BECK, baptised September 1837, who married Jonathan BOUTCHER on Sound Island in 1856.

Spurious = illegitimate, out of wedlock.

Mystery Monday - Our Mary Charles, daughter of Mary, will always have a mysterious father. There is unfortunately no way we will be able to determine who he was - he was not named in the parish records. Her mother Mary Charles is also a mystery - all we know is her name.

This Mary was my 5th great-grandmother.

202nd Anniversary of Joshua Stugdale FARRAR and Sarah LOWE, St. Peters, Leeds

Joshua and Sarah Farrar were the 5th great-grandparents of my children.

Joshua Stogdale Farrar was baptised in 1787, son of Joshua FARRAR and Ann HUTCHINSON.
(Not sure where the Stogdale comes from. There is a Joshua Stogdale that married a Rachel Musgrave in St. Peters Leeds November 1927. Are the names a coincidence?)

He married Sarah LOWE at St. Peters in 1809. Sarah was christened at St. Peters in 1787, daughter of Samuel.

Their nine children were baptised at St. Peters over a twenty year span between 1809 and 1830.
Mary 1809
George 1811 (married Eliza ?)
William 1814 (married Sarah Dixon)
Joshua 1815 (died as an infant)
*Rachel  1816
Sarah 1819
Josiah 1821
Ann 1827
John 1830 (died as a teenager)

Their daughter Rachel bap. 1816 married Abraham NEILD there in 1835, just a couple of years before they rebuilt the parish church of St. Peters.

in 1841, Joshua Stugdale Farrar was a Slate River, which according to http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/s.html is someone who would cleave blocks of quarried slate in the making of slates for roofing and other uses.
