.
A courageous woman, who extricated herself from an unpleasant situation and made a good life for her daughter (my husband's great-grandmother) and herself. I wish I knew more about her. At various point in her life, she went by Elizabeth, Margaret, Elizabeth Margaret, and Margaret Elizabeth.
Siblings
Emily 1849-1852
Anne 1851, married 1870 James Cheesman (hawker)
Eliza 1859, visiting married sister Emily 1881 (cloth sorter),
Emily 1861, married William Gould (costermonger) 1879,
2 Aug 1880
Elizabeth Margaret PETERS married James LOCKETT, her neighbour. The marriage was witnessed by his older sister Mary Ann Lockett. Her father William PETERS, skin dresser, died five years earlier, when Elizabeth Margaret was eleven years old. She had three older sisters. Their mother died before the end of 1880. Perhaps the mother was already ill at the time of the marriage.
Apr. 1881 Census Margaret Lockett (nee Peters) was living with her husband James LOCKETT in Tottenham. Shortly afterwards she would be pregnant with her first child.
Jan 29, 1882 Margaret has returned to her parent's address at the time of her daughter's baptism.(Not sure who was living at 3 Hearns Buildings in 1881 census?) Presumably she and her daughter Annie Eliza had little or no further contact with James Lockett after she left.
Apr 1891 - 2 Willow Grove, Bermondsey
She is calling herself Elizabeth ATKINSON, living with her husband William ATKINSON, a tanner's labourer. Annie Eliza has taken her stepfather's name. The couple have three children besides Annie Eliza - Emily (age 5), Henry (age 2) and William (age 1)
- at Emily's baptism Mar 1886, her mother is listed as Margaret
Apr 1901 - 66 Elsted Street
Annie Eliza is married and has just had twins, not yet named. Elizabeth Margaret ATKINSON's 1st grandchild, John Drake, is staying with his grandparents. Emily is 15, Henry 13, William 11. New children are Alfred (8), Albert (5), Minnie (3), and Frank (1) - same age as his nephew John Drake.
1902 William and Elizabeth Margaret PETERS youngest daughter is born, Ada Jane.
Apr 1911 - Chelmsford, Essex
Alfred, Albert, Minnie, Frank and Ada Jane are still at home (ages 18-9)
Annie Eliza DRAKE has emigrated to Ontario with her family.
Emily has married William HAYNE
Henry is now a butcher, boarding in Kent, soon to emigrate to New Zealand 1912
William? not sure where in Canada in 1911, presumably Vancouver BC (he was a greengrocer there in 1910) also a butcher by 1915
When William enlisted in 1915, his mother Margaret Elizabeth Atkinson was living in Leytonstone, Essex.
At that time, he was in Canada (Hamilton! 16 Apr. 1915)
Frank emigrated to British Columbia later on as well.
Elizabeth Margaret Atkinson died in Essex in 1948 at the age of 84. (5a 106)
