285th anniversary of the baptism of Elizabeth MARCHANT

Elizabeth was my 6th great-grandmother. Her parents were Richard MARCHANT and Mary EVETT.
She was the eldest of six children. Only one sibling survived to adulthood, her brother Jabez who was six years younger. Elizabeth was baptized 26 June 1726 in Bath, Somerset, England.

Elizabeth MARCHANT married Vickris DICKINSON 15 May 1746 in Comberwell, Wiltshire.  This seems to refer to modern day Cumberwell, near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. This was Vickris' second marriage; his first wife Martha Reeve left him a widow with an infant son, Caleb Dickinson (1740-1820).

Their first child, Richard was born in 1747, but died as an infant and was buried May 8, 1747. Elizabeth's mother, Mary Marchant (nee EVETT) died less than two years later. The couple's second child and our ancestor Mary Dickinson was born in 1748 and lived until 1799. Mary married Henry CRESWICKE of Hanham Court, near Bristol. Other children are Elizabeth and Richard (both died in infancy), Francis (died at the age of twelve) and Charles, who married Catherine Allingham.

Elizabeth was buried January 21, 1790 in Bristol.

Happy 291st anniversary, William SHELVERTON & Martha MANNING

My 7th great-grandparents were married on June 25, 1720 in Snailwell, Cambridgeshire, England. Snailwell is near Freckenham.
(The original record lists the groom as William SILVERTON).

Keith Paterson  has posted this photo of St. Peter's in Snailwell. This may have been the church where they were married.

We are not sure where exactly William and Martha were born and baptized, nor do we yet know their parents.

The couple lived at Timworth, Suffolk, near Bury St. Edmunds.
They had at least nine children:
Martha 1721
Hannah 1722 - died 1782 Freckenham, Suffolk.
Elizabeth 1724
Mary 1727
Anne 1729
*William 1731, married Ann BELL, died 17 Oct 1796 Burwell.
Susanna 1733, married Charles Mortlock, died 1821 Freckenham
Samuel 1735
Thomas 1736 baptized May, buried November

William Shelverton was buried 17 Nov 1757 in Freckenham, Suffolk. His wife Martha Shelverton was buried many years later - 20 Aug 1783 in Freckenham.

There is a SHELVERTON one-name project at GOONs. Contact Sandra Adams

This is our "brick wall couple". Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Yesterday was the anniversary of the baptism of Simon DICKINSON

Simon DICKINSON was baptized June 24, 1541 in Bradley, Staffordshire, England. He was my 10th great-grandfather. I have added him to our tree at ancestry.

Simon's parents were Richard DICKINSON (b.1521) and Elizabeth BAGNALL. Richard was a Magistrate who lived at Bradley Hall, in Staffordshire.  The couple were married about 1540. Simon was named for his maternal grandfather, Simon BAGNALL

There is some contention about Simon's parents. Some believe them to be James DICKINSON and Elizabeth HASLELOCK.

Here is a fine line drawing and description of Bradley Hall.

Previously I had thought Bradley Hall to be in Bradley, Staffordshire. It seems that it was actually in Kingswinford. There is a local connection to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Simon Dickinson married Katherine SUTTON on February 21, 1541 in Bradley Hall, Staffordshire. They had at least four children: Edward, Dudley, Eleanor & William.

Simon died in 1613 in Bradley Hall, Staffordshire.

Maren NIELSEN baptized 333 years ago today in Skaeve

Maren NIELSEN was my 7th great-grandmother. She was baptized 16 June 1678 in Skaeve, Hjørring, Denmark. Her parents were Niels NIELSEN and Dorothe LAURIDSEN. Maren had an older sister Anne, baptized in 1676.

Maren married Hans POULSEN in Skaeve on November 8, 1705. They had at least one child, Dorothe HANSEN (1707-1776), who married Jens NIELSEN 5 May 1737 in Skaeve.

The IGI lists several other children of Maren Nielsen and Hans Poulsen, often referred to as Maren Nielsdr/Nielsdatter and Hans Povelsen or Poelsen.

- Dorothe (Darotthe) was the eldest I have found.
- Maren bap. 1709
- Povel (Poul?) bap 1710
- Mette bap 1712
- Karen bap 1714, presumably buried within the year
- Karen bap 1715
- Anne bap 1720

Rubbing shoulders with Danish Royalty...

On my mother's side:

Rev. David Lindsay, my 11th great-grandfather, sailed to Norway with James VI of Scotland to fetch Anne of Denmark, daughter of Frederick II of Denmark & Sophie of Mecklenburg-Gustrow. He married them in Old Bishop's Palace in Oslo in Nov 1589. Anne was previously married by proxy to James VI, in August of that year at Kronborg Castle, known as the setting of Hamlet. Anne had tried to sail to Scotland, but was forced back to the shores of Norway, where she travelled overland to Oslo.

In 1589, the king of united Denmark-Norway was Christian IV, who reigned from 1588-1648. Christian IV succeeded his father at the age of 11, and was the longest reigning monarch of Denmark.

On my father's side,

Jacob Bording, my 13th great-grandfather, was the personal physician of Denmark and Norway's King Christian III. Jacob's daughter Johanna Bording married Lucas Bacmeister, my12th great-grandfather, who had tutored Johann & Magnus, the younger sons of Christian III in 1553 - 1556.

I am sure there are more.
